  1. Meet and Greet...Smell my Feet

    Sun, Sep 2, 2012 at 2:44 PM 4 Comments

I am an old school guy for sure but this Meet and Greet thing is something new to me. I know lots of act put on these things now but back in my day, unless you were a selected groupie or the drug dealer, you didn't meet anyone. From my personal experience, after a show the last thing you want to do is press the flesh. For one thing you should be real dehydrated and sopping wet from sweat not to...

  2. HowZZ does they do thats!

    Thu, Aug 9, 2012 at 9:48 PM 6 Comments

I've been playing guitar for nearly 50 years and have seen lot's of players come and go over the years. Early on I got wind of this kid from Texas called Billy Gibbons and his band called ZZTop, I started to figure out his stuff with the release of Francene back in 1973 I think. That guy played remarkably well and his licks were somewhat difficult to emulate dead on. Oh yeah you could come...

  3. That Little Old Kansas Tuck and Roll

    Sun, Jul 22, 2012 at 12:49 PM 2 Comments

I have noticed that ZZtop has not been using their whacky custom "Cream" onstage cabinets in their current tour but are using what looks to be a vintage Kustom naugahyde tuck and roll model 795 PA ( made in Chanute Kansas ) instead. This really brings back memories because in the late 60's I used a Kustom model 2J + 1H1 in white sparkle tuck and roll naugahyde. Those were superb amps for the...

  4. ZZTop has Stage Fright!!

    Sun, Jul 1, 2012 at 6:07 PM 0 Comments

I read that the Atmore Alabama show was cancelled due to some safety concerns with the stage. Probably a good call on their part in light of the disaster with the Sugarland show at the Indiana fair which killed 7 people. That was an unbelievable sight, see it in slow motion here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-AxEApmZtU&feature=related ZZ spokesperson has stated that there were...

  5. Flyin High acceptance

    Wed, Jun 20, 2012 at 6:37 PM 2 Comments

I heard Flyin High about a year ago and at first I was taken-a-back by it... seemed weird for a ZZ song... very commercial. I decided to learn it anyway and it's a very simple song and fortunately I didn't need to setup some whacko tuning, straight standard E tuning, I like it when they do that. :-) Since then I introduced it to my band and they took to it quickly. I had also started reading...

  6. Jerimiah Weed Singing Backwards?

    Mon, Jun 11, 2012 at 1:48 PM 1 Comments

I've been tracking down the microphone used in the Jerimiah Weed commercial and I pretty confident that it's a Heil "The Fin" microphone but one thing about that video hits me as a little strange... Billy and Dusty are singing into the back of the mic! They have the mic screwed on the stand backwards. Now, I don't know if the video director thought that the mic looked cooler mounted that way or...

  7. My personal Pearly Gates

    Sun, Jun 10, 2012 at 2:05 PM 2 Comments

BFG's Pearly Gates is of course famous but there's always been one thing I never liked about Les Pauls, and that is, they're heavy! I've been playing as long as BFG and have had several guitars over the years. Most of them were just too dang heavy to have hanging from your shoulder when playing gigs. Even BFG hollows out his stage guitars including PG knockoffs he uses... they are just too...

  8. Little old stage rigs from Texas

    Fri, Jun 8, 2012 at 4:51 PM 2 Comments

I have seen a youtube video on BFG's stage rig and basically he has two Marshall Valvestate 120 power amps, one for backup and one for playing. He uses a Marshall JMP1 preamp and a Digitech MEQ mono28 MIDI graphic equalizer in the line then through a Boss SE-70 effects processor with supplied signal from a RJM RG16 MIDI effects loop controller which is fed from a Samson UB-5D wireless system....

  9. Is that thing on? redux

    Fri, Jun 8, 2012 at 12:18 PM 3 Comments

I saw a blog from lone wolfe jr. about the microphone used in the Jerimiah weed commercial and he surmized that it may be a Shure 55. I have checked with the global brain trust and they though it was a Turner 44x... not some BFG creation I though it may be. The Turner is a 1940's mic and has red screens in it but a newer creation would be a Heil "The Fin" microphone which has blue screen...

  10. Whats up with that tone?

    Wed, Jun 6, 2012 at 12:09 PM 6 Comments

Just downloaded Texicali and "Gotsta Get Paid" has that sound again!!! I first noticed this busted up crackley sound on Rhythmeens "Loaded". I love it, it reminds me of flakey equipment I have used over the years that sputters and crackles like an old man wheezing and coughing. BFG, if your reading this drivel, what the hell are you using to get that effect??? it's awesome! or, is it one of...
